After firing Jerry Reese and Ben McAdoo, the New York Football Giants had to plan for their future. After hiring new General Manager Dave Gettleman, it seems the Giants have found their next head coach.

Pat Shurmur has spent two seasons as a coach with the Minnesota Vikings, most recently as the offensive coordinator. He has been a head coach before with the Cleveland Browns, where he finished his tenure with a record of 10-23 (.303).
The Giants had held interviews with Matt Patricia, Josh McDaniels, Steve Spagnuolo, Eric Studesville, before ultimately choosing Shurmur as their guy. Patricia was reportedly the number one choice for John Mara and co., but Patricia ended up favoring the Detroit Lions.

After Patricia made his decision, the choices came down to Shurmur and McDaniels. However, McDaniels’ two options were the Chicago Bears and the Indianapolis Colts – he chose the Colts job.
Shurmur is believed to be a guy that doesn’t have a set offensive philosophy and will adapt to a style based on the personnel he has at hand. This should be a breath of fresh air for the New York Giants. While the defense was great last season and has the talent, the offense has been putrid and hasn’t given the team too many chances to win games. While defense wins championships, you can’t win in today’s NFL by kicking two field goals and calling it a day.
While the Giants have seemed to have filled their head coaching vacancy, the team appears to have a couple more moves in the works to join Shurmur’s staff in the big apple. Former Carolina Panthers ST Coordinator Thomas McGaughey is expected to take the ST job. And on Sunday, it was reported that Jack Del Rio is the favorite to land the DC gig. Del Rio was most recently the head coach of the Oakland Raiders.

While the Giants may have to wait a bit longer for their head coach, it appears the pieces of the puzzle are starting to come together. Let’s just hope that this time around, the front office knows what it’s doing. Giants fans will not be tolerant with Mara and Steve Tisch for much longer – the city needs results.
