Super Bowl XLIV Season

Regular Season

Drew Brees’ lone Super bowl came in the 2009 NFL season. After failing to make the playoffs in the 2008 season Drew Brees and the Saints started the 2009 season hot.

In the first game of the year, Brees set a career-high of six touchdown passes thrown. By week seven Brees and the Saints were still undefeated and were facing off against the Miami Dolphins.

At one point they were down 24-3 yet still came back in dramatic fashion to keep their undefeated record.

The next week Brees and the Saints beat the Falcons to go 7-0, the best start to a season in franchise history. The winning did not stop there the Saints continued for thirteen straight games starting the season a ridiculous 13-0.

The Saints ultimately ended the regular season 13-3 with Brees sitting out for the final game of the regular season as they had already locked up the #1 seed in the NFC.

Playoffs

This first seed meant that the Saints got a bye through the wild-card round of the playoffs. This meant that the Saints only needed to win in the divisional round and the conference championships in order to make the Super Bowl.

In the divisional round, the Saints were matched up against the 10-6 Arizona Cardinals. Brees lit up the Cardinal’s three touchdowns 247 passing yards as the Saints easily won 45-14.

In the NFC championship, Brees faced off against the Minnesota Vikings winning 31-28 in overtime. This win sent Brees and the New Orleans Saints to their first Super Bowl appearance.

The Super Bowl

Super Bowl XLIV featured the 13-3 Saints matched up against the 14-2 Indianapolis Colts.

Entering the game the Peyton Manning-led Colts were five-point favourites to win.

The Colts started the game quick going up ten nothing. The saints responded by kicking two field goals in the second quarter in order to bring the score to 10-6.

Following halftime was one of the ballsiest play calls in NFL history. Saints coach Sean Peyton decided to attempt an onside kick to start the second have. The Saints recovered the kick which changed the momentum of the game.

The possession from the onside kick led to a touchdown and the first Saints lead of the game. From that point on Brees and the Saints pulled away ultimately winning the game by a score of 31-17.

Drew Brees earned his Super Bowl ring and also was awarded the Super Bowl MVP trophy.
